01.07.2025 – Keti Koti

On July 1st, Haarlem commemorates the victims and simultaneously celebrates the abolition of slavery. Nieuwe Vide will be closed on this day because this is and should be a nationally recognized holiday. (NL in comments)

We encourage you to celebrate and learn about the importance of emancipation of (family of) enslaved and oppressed people in relation to Keti Koti, and beyond. We hope to see you at upcoming events!

27th of June at Nieuwe Vide

On the Friday evening before Keti Koti, June 27, the Zwarte Muggen (Black Mosquitoes) are organizing a film night at Nieuwe Vide (Energieplein 69, Haarlem). They will screen the documentary Anton de Kom, Wij slaven van Suriname (We Slaves of Suriname) from 1999. This documentary by Frank Zichem tells the life story of resistance fighter, anti-colonial writer, and trade unionist Anton de Kom. The film is spoken in Sranantongo and Dutch, with Dutch subtitles during the Surinamese parts.
Afterwards, there will be space for a discussion about the importance of commemorating and celebrating Keti Koti, and about recognizing Keti Koti as a national holiday. Everyone is welcome from 19:30, and the film will start at 19:45. It lasts 1 hour, until 20:45. We will then have over an hour for discussion. The evening will end no later than 22:00.
