For the occasion of ‘Paarse Vrijdag’ (Dec 12), Nieuwe Vide & De Schuur present on Thursday Dec 11 a special edition of The Queer Image, where films and community come together with a screening of ‘Kiki‘ by Sara Jordenö, accompanied by the short film ‘The Voice of the Sea Goddess’ by Liane Paldi, made in collaboration with May Yoni Okke Van Loenen. After the screenings, Liane Paldi and May Yoni Okke Van Loenen join us for a post-screening conversation. The evening continues in the Schuurcafé, starting with a performance from drag king PowerPussBoi followed by DJ Pyn to set the atmosphere.
‘Kiki’ is an American–Swedish documentary that follows seven young LGBTQ people of color in New York’s vibrant Kiki scene over the course of four years. Through their dazzling Kiki ball performances and their personal stories, the film explores themes of homelessness, illness, prejudice, activism, chosen family, and empowered gender expression.
Short film: ‘The Voice of the Sea Goddess’ – A new watery mythology where a fluid sea goddess comes ashore with a message. Not to punish, but to transform. In a shell where bodies are not judged, where change is celebrated, and where fun and seriousness go hand in hand, she invites you to listen.
Drag Performance: PowerPussBoi – Born within the warm walls of Club Church into the drag family of The House of Løstbois and extended family of the The House of Hopelezz, PowerPussBoi is a campy reflection of societies view of gender ideals. Dolls represent gender perfection but with male dolls they are so hyper masculine that it becomes adorable or cute, which then again is more of a feminine trait. PowerPussBoi represents this full circle of gender expression. But don’t get fooled by the cute eyes, as they will turn to fire when PowerPussBoi starts to dance.
As the oldest drag house in the Netherlands, and currently based in the legendary @clubchurch in Amsterdam, The House of Hopelezz is home to an eclectic family of drag queens, drag kings, burlesque performers, artists, and queer outsiders from all over the world.
