Teken Or Leave it: Narrative Drawing: Juxtaposition & Image Rhyme by Gu(u)s Møystad (This Body of Ours)

This Body of Ours is a temporary queer collective consisting of 9 young comic makers. They ask the question: What does the future of comics in the Netherlands look like? They answer this question with a riotous, queer and colorful comic collection and exhibition at Nieuwe Vide. From the end of April they will also participate in DOC4, our artist in residency, and develop new work for the exhibition that opens on June 1.

For Teken or Leave it, Gu(u)s Møystad gives a narrative drawing workshop in the context of This Body of Ours. How is a cartoon created? We conduct research with two narrative techniques that play a major role in visual stories: visual rhyme and juxtaposition. How do you bring two separate images and ideas into conversation? Which stories then emerge, and what meanings do they evoke?

We start by creating an image bank with inspiration from magazines, and then work with image rhyme and juxtaposition to discover stories. This is how we playfully come up with new (and sometimes surprising!) stories.

Gu(u)s Møystad is a visual artist, writer & storyteller based in Amsterdam. His work is a mixture where story, text, image, truth and fiction intertwine and are expressed in various art forms. He draws on history, fantasy and folklore, and is fascinated by spaces in between and the boundaries and vulnerabilities of the body.

His comics and illustrations have appeared in printed and online magazines and platforms, including De Lage Landen, Stripgids and Hard//Hoofd. He also publishes his work independently and produces the cyberzine ‘Letters from Skemer’.

Teken or Leave It is a bimonthly evening at Nieuwe Vide for illustrators, makers and people who like to create. Participate? DM/info@nieuwevide.nl
