International Women’s Day

On International Women’s Day, the Young Feminist Collective Haarlem is organizing a sit-in at Stationsplein Haarlem to take up space and emphasize that women have the right to do so, especially since women’s rights are still being restricted in various parts of the world. We will gather, get to know each other better, work on different textile/crafts to highlight ‘traditionally feminine’ work, and possibly make music. With this, we want to honor the fact that women used to come together through handicrafts in their own circles to discuss their lives, as well as to create a visual language for themselves.

Follow the Young Feminist Collective on Instagram for updates on specific dates and events, and keep an eye on their Substack for written texts, poetry, recommendations, and much more. But above all: join us on March 8th at 12:00 PM at Stationsplein Haarlem. Join us for the screening at De Schuur after the sit-in (with a discount code).

Nieuwe Vide provides space for activists and collectives that connect activism and art. Read More about that here

Screening DAISIES – Schuur – 16:15

The refreshingly radical DAISIES adheres to no rules and is exuberantly anarchistic.

Czechoslovakia, 1966, two years before the Russian invasion. Marie I and Marie II, vivacious young women, are bored. The communist culture is drab and uninspired, so the two decide to shake things up. They don swimsuits and brightly colored dresses, have a major food fight, steal what they need, and completely disrupt the daily routine. For the ‘daisies’ in the title, nothing is sacred; everything and everyone is an object of their surreal-disruptive mockery—humor and fun are a form of protest in a society that has declared collective political obedience as the highest good.

Vera Chytilová was a pioneer of the nouvelle vague. As early as 1962, she made personal, controversial films. The communist party initially wanted to ban the screening of Sedmikrásky due to its ‘nihilistic’ tone, but under pressure from the younger generation, they relented. However, the authorities imposed a work ban on Chytilová until 1975, and after 1968, nothing remained of the ‘socialism with a human face’ under party leader Alexander Dubček.

DISCUSSION

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we warmly invite you to a special screening of the ultimate feminist classic DAISIES on March 8th. The film will be introduced by Gwyneth Sleutel, followed by a discussion with JongFem. Finally, we will all move to the café, where we will toast to the day, to each other, and to anarchistic exuberance! We will, of course, do this entirely in the rebellious spirit of the film.

The Young Feminist Collective Haarlem, also known as JongFem, is a Haarlem collective by and for young people, aimed at introducing youth to feminism and everything that comes with it. JongFem organizes workshops, film nights, and demonstrations, in collaboration with and from the location of Nieuwe Vide.

Gwyneth Sleutel works as a dramaturg at NTR, where she contentedly supports various films, series, and (interactive) online series. She was a guest columnist for the Volkskrant and has a regular column in Opzij. In 2024, the Financiële Dagblad named her FD Talent. Gwyneth is heavily involved in improving female representation and has also developed a masterclass that she conducts at several film festivals.
