Intersections Art Rotterdam

Het werk betrof een (video) performance genaamd ‘Synthesize Me’. Daarvoor plaatste zij moderne mobiele apparaten en hun ‘swipe’ gebaren tegenover de theremin en zijn handgebaren.

Tijdens de opening vond een performance plaats met medewerking van Theremin-speler Thorwald Jørgensen. “Jørgensen studeerde Klassiek Slagwerk in Utrecht en Tilburg. Na zijn studie legde hij zich toe op het bespelen van de theremin. Hij studeerde interpretatie en techniek bij Saskia Boon (voormalig celliste van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest). Jørgensen treedt op als solist met orkesten in binnen- en buitenland. ”

Intersections vond plaats in de voormalige werkplaatsen van de Van Nellefabriek (tegenover de hoofdingang van Art Rotterdam). “16 niet-commerciële presentatieruimten en kunstenaarsinitiatieven presenteren hier in de 1300 m2 grote ruimte een combinatie van video-, installatie- en performancekunst”.  Voor een overzicht van alle deelnemers klik hier.

Taylor over haar eigen werk: “The theremin is the only musical instrument you play without touching although it does rely on physical presence of the body to voice its sound. It uses capacitive sensing just like modern day mobile phones and has a parallel to Wi-Fi that also works at the hand of proximity. This synthesizer began in 1920 with professor Leon Theremin, he played around with the latest technology then radio, it fascinated Leon because it transformed electricity into sound and he discovered that if he put the radio frequency oscillators closer together you interfere with the sound it creates. He built an instrument where the performers body determines the sound though the distance you have to the object with capacitive sensing…I would like to create a (video) performance that delves into the relationship between media and medium, modern day mobiledevice hand swipe gestures vs. theremin hand movements.”
