On Saturday, June 1, the documentary Special Flight by Fernand Melgar will be screened at Nieuwe Vide. This documentary is about the country with Europe’s strictest immigration laws, Switzerland. In the Frambois administrative detention center near Geneva, the suspense is killing. Asylum seekers who have exhausted all legal remedies and illegal immigrants are awaiting their deportation. Without a trial, they sometimes have to wait up to two years. Their despair has a name: special flight. In his films, Melgar shows himself to be a masterful and careful observer. You won’t catch him being accusative or overtly emotional. Yet his film mercilessly adress the sore spot of a merciless system.
After the screening there will be a discussion about how the process of such a special flight proceeds and what possibilities there are to prevent someone from being deported.
‘Special Flight’ is part of the exhibition ‘The World of K, or the prophecy of modern bureaucracy’. The exhibition can be seen until 23 June.
