(be)longing
Nieuwe Vide has not yet opened its doors to the public, but this summer the work can be seen from the street in the windows of our building. In addition to being a presentation institution, Nieuwe Vide also has 25 studios that are used by artists and small creative companies. In the work be(longing), the studio artists jointly reflect on what it means to belong somewhere; a house does not necessarily have to be made of stones. From behind the studio windows we show in a colorful poster ribbon what Nieuwe Vide has to offer. But our own stone ‘house’, Nieuwe Vide, is also facing an uncertain future. With (be)longing, we also want to draw attention to the precariousness of our housing situation and the importance of space for art in the city.
(be)longing is part of Unlocked/Reconnected, an initiative that brings together a wide range of ‘houses for art’: museums, institutes for presentation, galleries, artists’ initiatives and corporate collections. The point of departure for Unlocked/Reconnected is the idea of solidarity, the will to reflect collectively on what home is. Our world must not become fragmented, fractured into enclosing walls: a consolidation of forces and locations, national and international, can in fact show us what the house/home can mean. As an initiative Unlocked/Reconnected stems from a sense that opening up the home, in the aftermath of the lockdown, will force us to reconsider our outlook on this. Unlocked/Reconnected underlines the importance of art and culture in this period of global crisis.
