“Using energy along with the weather”

Rosalie Apituley is a critical designer that does artistic research into the social aspects of the energy transition. With her work “Uit de Meterkast”, 2022 (Out of the Meter Cupboard), she proposes a world in which designed objects such as: lamps, fuse boxes and cables tell us how much energy we use, by movement. With this work she aims to emphasise on the fact that all energy we use, causes an effect elsewhere in the world: it does not just come out of the wall.

Currently she is artist-in-residence at Alliander, the biggest network operator in the Netherlands. She researches the potential of adapting the culture around energy use into a more weather and seasonal oriented culture. If we would adapt our energy demand according to the energy supply by sun and wind, the world could look completely different. She pictures this culture as highly dynamic: moments of collective celebration and abundance are followed by scarcity and reflection. Rosalie is now designing an ice-rink on solar energy that will be on show in the summer of ’26 in the Netherlands.

In 2022 Rosalie graduated (cum laude) with Product Design at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem (NL). Her works “Uit de Meterkast” and “It Giet Oan!” have been exhibited during the Dutch Design Week ‘23 and ’24 and have received several nominations. Her work has been published in the DD ‘22 yearbook and in 2023 She received the Talent Development Grant from Creative Industries Fund
